e.Evie/ makes things

welcome to my portfolio

hi, I'm Evelyn

I like figuring out how to make things.

Sometimes that's a whole machine. Sometimes it's a tiny controller, a custom keyboard, or something old that deserves another life. This is where I keep those projects.

Things I've made.

Machine builds, everyday tools,
and things worth bringing back.

CO₂ Laser
System

Bringing a neglected CO₂ laser back to life: recovering a rust-bound motion system, replacing the old electronics, and improving the machine along the way.

A build across disciplines

  • Mechanical & motion systems
  • Electrical & controller integration
  • Machine configuration & troubleshooting

Project notes

Starting point. I was handed a machine in poor condition, with a motion system binding from rust and old electronics that needed replacing.

My work. I stripped out the old electronics and rebuilt the control system, working through the mechanical recovery alongside it. I also added better lighting and improved the emergency-stop cutoff.

The challenge. The hard part was the starting condition: breaking an extensive rebuild into problems I could solve, rather than treating the machine as a lost cause. This remains my current work project.

Standing Desk
Controller

An ESP32-based upgrade to an existing standing desk controller, with custom features and an enclosure designed for everyday use.

ElectronicsControlsPhysical integration
Project notes

My work. I tapped into the original controller, integrated an ESP32 to add my own features, and designed an enclosure that felt intentional and practical to use every day.

The challenge. Working out how to interface with the original controller was the biggest technical hurdle. The enclosure brought a different challenge: making the electronics into an attractive, usable object.

The result. This became one of my most efficient projects, bringing together electronics and design skills that were starting to feel solid. The controller is finished and installed on my desk. The gallery shows the completed enclosure alongside earlier prototypes and design work.

Eclipse
3D Printer

A large-format 3D printer designed from the ground up over roughly three years. Now my reliable daily-use machine, built with speed, part quality, and visual design in mind.

3D printingMechanicalMachine building
Project notes

The goal. I wanted a fast printer and wanted to design it from scratch, both mechanically and visually.

My work. Eclipse took roughly three years of frequent work across hardware and software. It became a long-term lesson in planning, budgeting, and developing a machine through many iterations.

The result. It is now my daily-use large printer: reliable, fast, and producing parts I am happy with. I am especially proud of how the mechanical and visual design came together.

04 / RestorationOngoing restoration

1994 Mitsubishi
3000GT

A long-running restoration with a manual-transmission swap, bodywork, and a major visual change. A project that pushed me well beyond my previous automotive experience.

RestorationMechanical assemblyModification
Project notes

Starting point. Before this project, my automotive experience was mostly oil changes. The transmission swap was a much bigger undertaking than anything I had attempted on a car.

My work. I performed the manual-transmission swap and worked through the restoration and bodywork, learning much more about engines, transmissions, and how the car fits together.

The challenge. The transmission work tested my perseverance. There were points where I considered giving up or selling the car; working through those difficulties became one of the most valuable parts of the project.

Where it stands. The car has changed substantially, but the restoration is ongoing. The comparison shows its earlier appearance alongside how it looks now, rather than presenting it as a finished restoration.

Custom
Guitar Pedals

Custom blues-oriented guitar pedals built by adapting a modifiable $5 amplifier board, revising the schematic, and making my own enclosures.

Audio electronicsControlsEnclosure finishing
Project notes

The idea. I wanted a good blues pedal and was interested in a build based on a low-cost amplifier board that could be modified. I also wanted a pedal with its own visual character and custom faceplate art.

My work. I modified the schematic to make the circuit my own and built the pedals in 3D-printed enclosures.

Next. The faceplate artwork is still to come. The current enclosures are printed; I plan to make metal versions as a later iteration.

L-Shift60

A keyboard designed entirely from the ground up. A long-running passion project combining custom electronics, evolving requirements, and a visual design I am especially proud of.

Custom keyboardElectronicsProduct design
Project notes

The goal. This has been a passion project since I joined the keyboard community. I wanted to create my own keyboard from the ground up.

The challenge. Designing around multiple changing features pushed me to keep the electrical and physical design flexible as the project evolved.

Where it stands. The keyboard build is finished apart from the enclosure. The photos show the assembled hardware and earlier printed prototypes; the renders show the proposed enclosure design.

CNC Controller
& Enclosure

A finished, fully functional CNC controller with a custom enclosure. A project in designing for manufacture, documenting a system, and seeing it produce real parts in the shop.

CADPanel layoutMechanical assembly
Project notes

My work. I developed the enclosure and component layout with manufacturing in mind, wrote the documentation, and brought the controller into practical shop use.

The challenge. This pushed my modeling skills toward parts that could actually be manufactured and assembled. The documentation was part of making the whole system usable.

The result. The controller is finished and fully functional. Seeing it work and help make actual parts was especially satisfying. I later revisited the design on my own time to work out how I would improve a future version.

A little about me

Curious by nature.
Hands-on by choice.

from the CAD file to the workbench

My work spans custom machines, electronics, CAD, and hands-on assembly. I like projects where those skills meet.

At Take Shape Systems, I work as an Office Manager and R&D Lead. I build and support CNC routers, laser systems, and 3D printers, work from electrical schematics and engineering drawings, and use Fusion 360 CAD/CAM for fabrication and machine development.

I also keep drawings, revisions, bills of materials, and job travelers organized, helping connect the design work with what happens on the shop floor.

A look at work in progress.
Stages shown as they stand today.

PCB design / earlier working tests

GBALite

Previously called GBADS. A personal favorite, now at the PCB-design and hand-trimmed-board stage. These photos show earlier working tests.

Earlier prototype photos

The project was previously called GBADS. These older photos document working tests and debug wiring, rather than the current PCB revision.
